# Use your own domain

> Serve your help center from an address like help.acme.com.

Your help center starts at its chat.sh address. You can serve it from a subdomain you own instead, like help.acme.com.

## Set it up

1. Open **Help center**, then **Domain**.
2. Under **Your own domain**, enter the address and select **Save**.
3. Add the records shown to your DNS host:
   - A **CNAME** record that sends readers to your help center.
   - A **TXT** record that proves the domain is yours.
4. Select **Check DNS**.

Choose your DNS host from the list for exact steps. Most hosts want only the first part of the name, like `help`; the full name is shown beside it for the ones that ask for it.

## Waiting for it to go live

DNS usually updates within a few minutes, and sometimes takes an hour. Once both records are found, the domain is verified and a certificate is issued so it serves over HTTPS. The status on the Domain page tells you which step it is on.

## Cloudflare

Set the record's proxy status to **DNS only**, with a grey cloud. A proxied record stops the certificate from being issued.

## Use a subdomain

Use an address like help.acme.com or docs.acme.com. A bare domain like acme.com cannot point at a help center this way. To serve it on your main domain, put it in a folder instead.

## Your chat.sh address keeps working

The original address still opens your help center. Links you shared before the change keep working.
