# Visitors' conversations in the messenger

> How visitors find earlier conversations, how long they are kept, and how the messenger behaves on phones.

Visitors can go back to earlier conversations from the messenger itself. Your team sees every conversation in the [inbox](https://chat.sh/help/articles/find-a-conversation), whatever the visitor's browser keeps.

## The conversations list

The list icon in the messenger's bar opens **Your conversations**. Each one shows who wrote last, how long ago, and **With the team** or **Resolved**. Select **New conversation** to start fresh with the AI.

## How long a visitor's browser keeps them

- **The open conversation** stays in the browser for 24 hours, with its last 40 messages. After that, opening the messenger starts a new one.
- **The list** remembers up to 20 conversations for 180 days in that browser.
- **Signed-in, verified users** see their last 20 conversations on any device. See [Identify signed-in users](https://chat.sh/help/articles/identify-signed-in-users).

Clearing the browser's site data clears the list for anonymous visitors. Their conversations stay in your inbox, and the link in any reply email still opens them.

## Opening a conversation from email

**View conversation** in a reply email goes back to the page the visitor was on and opens that conversation in the messenger there. If chat.sh does not know that page, the conversation opens on a page of its own on chat.sh.

## Phones

On screens narrower than 480 pixels, the open window fills the screen. The close button takes the visitor back to your page.

## When it cannot connect

If the network drops, the messenger shows "The messenger is unavailable right now." New replies arrive the moment they are sent while the connection is up. If that live connection is blocked, the messenger checks for them every few seconds while open, and every minute while closed.
