ImportHelp Scout

For teams on Help Scout Docs who want a help center that answers the question.

Leave Help Scout. Keep every article.

Paste your Docs API key and your collections, categories, articles, and images come over. Old /article/ links redirect to the new pages, so nothing you shared breaks.

Importing comes with the lifetime: $499 once per workspace, never a subscription.

Three steps. No export, no copy and paste.

Everything happens in one window inside chat.sh. You see what will come over before anything moves.

  1. 1

    Copy your Docs API key

In Help Scout, open Your Profile, then Security and Access, and copy the Docs API key. It is used for this import and never stored.

  2. 2

    See what comes over

Collections, categories, and articles, counted from Help Scout's lists in seconds. Run more than one Docs site? Pick the one to bring.

  3. 3

    Import

Articles are read in one by one, then go live in the same collections. Images follow in the background, and you can close the window.

It brings the parts that usually break

Copying the text is the easy half. The links people bookmarked, the screenshots on Help Scout's servers, and how your categories nest are what turn a move into a weekend.

Old links keep working

Every article remembers its Help Scout address. Point the Docs domain at chat.sh and /article/150-add-a-custom-domain answers with a 301 to the new page. Old category and collection links land on the help center home instead of a 404.

Your categories, in the same places

Each collection stays a collection, and its categories become sections in it. An article filed in two categories goes under the first, so nothing shows up twice. A private collection's articles come in as drafts, never public.

Off Help Scout's servers

Every image is copied into your help center, so closing the Help Scout account breaks nothing.

Videos that load when pressed

Embedded YouTube, Loom, Vimeo, Vidyard, and Cloudflare Stream videos play in place, behind a cover copied over with the article.

Safe to run again

Import again after adding articles in Help Scout. New ones are added, untouched ones updated, and anything you edited here stays yours.

Questions

Something not here? Email support@chat.sh.

Do I need a paid plan?
Yes. Importing comes with the lifetime. A free workspace can try everything else first.
Does it change anything in Help Scout?
No. chat.sh only reads your Docs. The key could write, but the import never does, and it is not kept once the import is done. Your Docs site keeps running until you move the domain.
Where do I find the Docs API key?
In Help Scout, click your avatar, open Your Profile, then Security and Access. The key is under Docs API. Generate one if there is none yet.
When do the old links start redirecting?
Once the domain your Docs site used points at chat.sh. Until then, the new articles live at your chat.sh address.
What if the import goes past my page allowance?
Nothing is refused. Articles that would go past it come in as drafts, ready to publish once there is room.
How long does it take?
Most Docs sites are read and in within a few minutes. Images keep copying in the background, and anything that fails is tried again every hour for two days.
